Superpharmacy Now Accepting Electronic Prescriptions

Everything you need to know about Electronic Prescriptions

When your doctor prescribes medications, you can now choose to receive an Electronic Prescription rather than the traditional paperwork.

Superpharmacy can now accept and dispense these Electronic Prescriptions when you order on our website or through our pharmacies around Australia.

You may, however, be wondering exactly what an Electronic Prescription is and why you may want to consider receiving your prescriptions in that format rather than the standard paper version. Don't worry, we are here to give you all the information you need to feel confident in the new system.

What is an Electronic Prescription?

An electronic prescription is a prescription that is electronically generated and sent by your doctor to your mobile phone or computer. Your electronic prescription is used in the same way as a paper prescription and allows you to get medicines dispensed at Superpharmacy without having to send any paperwork to us. Watch the video below to learn more.

How does an Electronic Prescription work?

You can request an Electronic Prescription from your Doctor instead of a paper prescription. The prescribing software will then send you an encrypted 'Token’ which is an electronic message sent to your mobile phone or email account. This will be in the form of an SMS or email message (or in an app if you have one) with a QR barcode and some information about your medicine. Ordering an Electronic Prescription is as easy as ordering your item on our website and then emailing the prescription ‘Token’ to epharmacist@superpharmacy.com.au

Superpharmacy will immediately process your order once we receive the Electronic Prescription and send your medicine directly to your nominated address.

There will be one token for each prescription medicine that you are prescribed.

Sending a Prescription to Superpharmacy.

When you purchase prescription medication online with Superpharmacy, we need a valid script in our possession before we can dispatch your medications to you.

For Electronic Prescriptions, it is now as easy as sending your Token to epharmacist@superpharmacy.com.au.

For Paper Prescriptions, we still require the physical paperwork in our possession, so you will need to post it to your nearest Supepharmacy store if you haven't done so already. Find your store here.

All Paper Prescriptions will need to be posted in the mail and received by us.

To find your nearest postal address for Paper Prescriptions, visit our Store Page

Can I send a photo of my Script?

A photo is only valid for Electronic Prescriptions. For traditional Paper Prescriptions, we will need you to post the script to us as highlighted above.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Electronic Prescription?

An Electronic Prescription is a prescription that is electronically generated and sent to your mobile phone (via sms) or email. You can use an Electronic Prescription in the same way as a paper prescription, to get medicines from your pharmacy.

How does an Electronic Prescription work?

When you head to the Doctors, you can request an Electronic Prescription. The Doctor will prescribe the medication as normal, but rather than receiving a piece of paper that you then have to give to your pharmacy, you will receive an email or SMS with a secure Token. This Token will look like a QR Code with some extra information. Simply send a copy of this Token to your pharmacy and it functions the exact same as walking in and handing the paperwork over to the dispensary.

How can I get an Electronic Prescription?

You can request an Electronic Prescription from your Doctor instead of a paper prescription. The prescribing software will then send you an encrypted 'Token’ which is an electronic message sent to your mobile phone or email account. This will be in the form of an SMS or email message (or in an app if you have one) with a QR barcode and some information about your medicine.

What does an Electronic Prescription look like?

It will be unique QR Code sent as an SMS or email message (or in an app if you have it downloaded) along with some information about your medicine. It will look similar to this:

How do Repeats work?

When you have authorised repeats, Superpharmacy will send you a new token for your next repeat. The Electronic Prescription process is then repeated when you next want your prescription medicine dispensed.

Can I still receive / use a Paper Prescription?

Yes absolutely! Nothing changes with the current Paper Prescription system, and we will still need the physical copy of that paperwork in our possession before we can dispense the medication. This is where we can see how much faster Electronic Prescriptions will be, with no more waiting for the paperwork to arrive in the post to us.

How safe & secure are Electronic Prescriptions?

Electronic Prescriptions must meet a high level of privacy and security. Your prescription is protected and cannot be accessed by anyone until it is unlocked at your pharmacy by the pharmacist when they scan your token.

Does each medication get its own Token?

You will get a separate token for each medicine you are prescribed.

If you have repeats on your prescription, your pharmacy will send you a new token for your next repeat. You will need to provide the new token to the pharmacist in order to collect your repeat.

How many times can a Token be used?

A Token can only be used once to dispense a single medication. A Token represents a single dispensing of a single medication. You will receive a token for each medication, and a new one upon each dispensing. Your pharmacy can verify which token has been used. Once you receive your medicine, you should delete the token used to get that medicine. Once a token has been used it is no longer valid.

What happens if I lose my Token?

If you lose your token, you will need to ask your doctor to cancel the Electronic Prescription and issue a new one. The doctor will send you a new token.

Can the Doctor send the Electronic Prescription directly to a pharmacy?

No, the Doctor is only able to send the Token to you directly.
